Correspondence in the papers chiefly discusses family and local news. Topics of interest include Kentucky in 1790 particularly Indian troubles and separation from the U.S. over the Jay-Cardoqui treaty; the Civil War particularly slave hiring and use of slaves as servants in the army, procurement of clothes, U. Va. as an army hospital and the burial of Confederate dead in the University cemetery, 1861, the battle of New Market Heights, 1864 (Chafin's Farm, Fts. Harrison and Gilmer), and the desolation after the battle of Fredericksburg; the Richmond Exposition, 1888; Virginius Dabney's New York Latin School, his library, and his publication of Don Miff and Gold that did not glitter; Susan Dabney Smedes' Memorials of a Southern planter; Richard Heath Dabney's The causes fo the French revolution, and his teaching career at U. Va., particularly a 1907 controversy over compulsory Latin; and Virginius Dabney's schoolboy impressions of France, and his years at Episcopal High.
